One of the classic grapes from Bordeaux, closely related to cabernet sauvignon, both genetically and in terms of taste. In fact, both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot stem from Cabernet Franc. It is rarely the only grape used in Bordeaux wines, since it is usually combined with cabernet sauvignon and merlot. In contrast, the elegant wines Bourgueil and Chinon from the Loire valley are produced mainly from pure Cabernet Franc. The wines often have notes of red and dark berries, like raspberries and black currants, but also pepper and grass.
