Tempranillo is the Spanish counterpart of cabernet sauvignon and is the most common grape from Rioja. Temprano means early in Spanish and tempranillo grapes ripen up to two weeks earlier than other grapes that it is traditionally mixed with.

The grape is described as having a strawberry, spicy, leathery and tobacco leafy character.
