Gewürz means spice in German, and this grape gives wines with aromatic properties that really stand out. Gewürztraminer produces wine with strong notes of rose petals, litchi and passion fruit -- the aroma can be so strong that it gives the impression of having been artificially scented. The grape is mostly famous in Alsace, in eastern France, but is also grown in Germany and sometimes also in, for example, Austria, Italy, New Zealand and the US.
